In the past, Shōta Toyokawa walks through Karakura Town with his sister, Yui Toyokawa, as Souls following their deaths in a car crash that same day which separated them from their parents. Continuing to search for their parents all over the city and in the pouring rain for several days with the Humans around them unable to perceive them, Shōta and Yui are unable to locate them and fall asleep beneath a tree in a forest one night.
Some time later, Shōta wakes up and discovers that Yui is missing.
