Having soundly overwhelmed Rukia Kuchiki in a clash within his hideout in the Forest of Menos, Ashido Kanō thrusts his Zanpakutō toward her head, but stops short, leaving his blade hanging inches from a surprised Rukia's face for several seconds before standing up, turning around, and sheathing his Zanpakutō as he walks away. When Rukia demands to know what the meaning of this is, Ashido reveals that he was simply testing her strength because the harshness of the area makes it difficult to survive.
